hosting wordpress Question: How to get WordPress Blog into a separate URL?
I want to have 2 or 3 different wordpress based blogs hosted under one account. I already have several domain names and a host and have already installed WP blogs into separate folders through FTP.

But, what I need to know how to have the domain URL point straight to the blog without having to move files into the root directory. If domain name is 123blog.com, i want it to go straight to the Blog instead of having 123blog.com/blog/ in the URL.

To do what your saying you will need to use the .htaccess file on your apache webserver.

Take a look at the article on .htaccess i provided below. On top of that you want to do a redirect from a directory. Your rewrite rule then would be something like

RewriteRule ^([^/]+)(/)?$ /blogs/index.php?var=$ 1 [NC]

replace var with whatever info wordpress uses. You could also try the built URL rewriter that is used by wordpress. Though I believe you will still have to use an .htaccess file in your website root directory to get past the isssue. best of luck.

www.bluehost.com – use Bluehost as your hosting for very easy wordpress installation. If you signup here you’ll also get Google adwords credit & yahoo search marketing.

wp themes Question: cant access sub folder install of wordpress, if wp is in root too if its pw protected?
Hi, I have a domain name, ill call it mysite.com for this question.
i have wordpress installed in the root directory, mysite.com
i also have another copy of wordpress installed in mysite.com/members
everything works fine, no problems.. cant complain :)
until i go to cpanel and put a password on mysite.com/members

now /members is password protected. , i access mysite.com and still everything is fine.
now i try to access mysite.com/members expecting to be prompt with a user and pass login window..
but instead i am brought to my root domain. mysite.com/ and i see a wordpress themes page not found error.

so my 2 cents is, my copy of wordpress in my root. mysite.com is thinking i am trying to access a wordpress page called /members which i normally wouuld have created through the add new page thing through the admin panel, but sense that doesnt exist i get this error….

could someone figure this out? and try to tell me what to do?
thanks!
i tried this on two different servers, from two different companies, so im pretty sure its not server configuration. but who knows.

WordPress, when it’s in the root directory especially, doesn’t play nice with any tweaks to your htaccess file, which is what you do when you set up a user/pass login like you want.

What I would do, if I were in your shoes, and providing the /members doesn’t use the same db as the wordpress in the root folder, is set members up as a subdomain – so you’ll have members.yourdomain.com

Password protection should work the way you need it to.
