Fifth Annual WordCamp San Francisco Highlights Rapid Growth, Announces Developer Survey Results

San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) August 15, 2011

The fifth annual WordCamp San Francisco was held at the Mission Bay Conference Center from Friday, August 12 through Sunday, August 14. WordCamp San Francisco is the official annual conference of the WordPress open source project. The event was organized into multiple tracks per audience (first-time user workshop; professional and large-scale implementations; developers and designers; bloggers and content creators). WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg also announced the results of the 2011 developer survey.

STATE OF THE WORD KEYNOTE:

Each year at WordPress San Francisco, Mullenweg presents a “State of the Word” keynote that recaps the past year’s accomplishments, and provides a glimpse into future releases. Highlights included:

“22 of every 100 active domains created in the U.S. are running WordPress.”
“WordPress 3.2, released in July 2011, had 500,000 downloads in the first two days, representing the fastest upgrade velocity ever.”
“WordPress now has 15,000 plugins and 200 million plugin downloads.”
“14.7 percent of the top million websites in the world use WordPress.” (source: W3Techs)
“You are not customers of Facebook and Twitter… you are the product. The advertisers are the client.”
“Being involved with the WordPress core is one of the most rewarding experiences for a developer on the web right now.”
“One of my dreams is for WordPress to auto-update like Chrome. Versions are so archaic.”
“I obsess about every release and every feature.”

Mullenweg’s keynote is now available at WordPress.tv (http://wordpress.tv/2011/08/14/matt-mullenweg-state-of-the-word-2011). Video from all of the sessions will be posted on WordPress.tv in coming weeks.

WORDPRESS DEVELOPER SURVEY:

This year WordPress commissioned its first-ever developer survey, which ran for six weeks beginning on July 4, 2011 and generated responses from 18,000 users worldwide. Results included:

2,800 survey respondents are making a living using WordPress.
53% of the respondents are working as WordPress developers, 36% of which are self-employed.
The 6,800 self-employed developers have created 170,000 sites, averaging nearly 25 sites per developer.
The WordPress developer’s average hourly rate is $ 58.
92% of these developers use WordPress as a CMS; 8% use as a blog.

Additional survey results will be available at http://wordpress.org/news shortly.

Every day of the conference was sold out, with more than 1,000 total registrants. It was the highest attendee level for a WordCamp event, with U.S. and international representation including Amsterdam, Hawaii, Israel, Nepal and Romania. Thirty percent of the attendees were women.

Bluehost, DreamHost and Automattic were this year’s “Bling Bling” supporters. Additional sponsors included Microsoft, .tv, Zemanta, Voce Communications, ServerBeach, Layered Tech, Laughing Squid, GetShopped.org, Event Expresso and A Small Orange.

Information about upcoming WordCamps is posted on WordCamp Central at http://central.wordcamp.org/schedule including Los Angeles (September 10), Salt Lake City (September 10), Kobe, Japan (September 11) and Cape Town, South Africa (September 15).

WordPress – A Wizard in the world of Blogging and Website designing!

WordPress is a very popular blogging and content management system (CMS) tool. It is possibly one of the most well known and respected tool  with over 4 million* websites using  WordPress!

WordPress is an open source project which started in the year 2003, as a blogging tool.

Users are given an intuitive online interface to type, tag with keywords and upload their blogs or articles. The core idea is to help the user by taking over all the effort needed to present the information online, allowing him/her to concentrate on the content of his blog.  Users can customize the theme or in other words, the web layout, background colors, font etc to better suit his content or give a more classy and unique look for his blog.

Once the blog is published on a website, there are other features provided by wordpress developer : Typically, when people read articles or blogs, they like to leave their comments.  The interface to leave comments also allows authors to manage the comments posted.

Sometimes, authors would like to link to or comment on other blogs that are related to the same topic; these are done by what are called pingbacks and trackbacks. This way, the readers are made aware of the author’s comments on other blogs in one single page. The other feature that is very useful is Permalink or Pretty url, where users can specify a human readable and intuitive weblink name instead of machine generated links with numbers and special characters.

As WordPress became one of the default choices for blogging globally, subsequent version releases also came to be used as a CMS tool. The administrative panel provided could be used to customize the web layout around the content. The most important feature being a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor giving the user an idea of how the webpage would actually look in browser window.

The user can select if the home page will be static or a live one , for eg. with posts or testimonials updated as they are uploaded to a particular section of the website.

Individual customized Page Templates can also be applied to different pages of the website. Thus, user could choose some pages to not have the same header and footer as the rest. The user also has options to include widgets as sidebars that are dynamic and change as the page changes. By turning off some features that are blog specific, and customizing other features, users can easily build a truly dynamic website with WordPress!

That sounds a bit weird. But if you want me to have a look at it just email me.

How to Select a WordPress Theme

The first thing that will come to one’s mind, when decided to write a blog on a topic they are interested in, is selection of the theme or template for their blog. There are number of blogging platforms like WordPress,Blogger,Typepad ,etc. If you do a search on google for the blogging platforms, you will get a list of those. Among all, WordPress is most popular and has thousands of blogs built using this platform. It is Open Source project and is free to use.

In this article, I will tell you how to select a WordPress(WP) theme. A WP theme is nothing but a piece of software used to build your blog. It contains various templates or files which work together in the background to give you the desired look and feel for your blog. Following the below tips help you to select your blog theme easily and efficiently.

1. Category: This means what is your blog all about. It defines the kind of audience you want to target your blog to. For example, if you want to write a blog about dogs, then your blog comes under the ’Pets’ category. Or if you like to target to the people interested in cooking then you category would be ‘Food’. Finding your category helps you to find the right theme and thus saving your time and energy in the process of setting it up and later correcting it. There are themes in every major category ranging from Travel to Music to Business.  You can find these at the WP Theme directory and also at number of websites like Free wordpress themes, Daily Blog tips, themestudio.

2. Colors and layouts:Some people like to have their favorite colors to their blogs. So, try getting your themes in those colors as much as possible but this may not be possible always although there are hundreds of WP themes which match every desire.  Also there is another advantage in using a theme of your favorite color as you do not need to change a lot in the theme to get your color. But I recommend not to focus much on this aspect because it is not that difficult to change it later once you are comfortable with the code behind it. Rather concentrate on the layout of the theme. Decide on what type of layout you want. Browse through the list of themes you have at WordPress.org and other websites sited above. This will give you an idea of how it looks and then you can easily make a decision. There are number of layouts available, but popular are:

 Single Column

Two Column (With Sidebar)

Two Column (Without Sidebar)

Three Column

Four column

Fixed width

Fluid width

Also there are some layouts specifically designed for Photos centered and Videos centered blogs. I feel you have to select a theme which you can live with it for long term as you are the one who visits your blog the most. Experiment some themes with some test posts and pages. Comment them, categorize them and see how your selected theme looks. This is the best way to ensure you have the right theme. Do not see the blog theme from your own point of view but from your reader’s point of view.

 3. Purpose of your blog:This is important as this will help you to select your theme for the long term. If you are going to write a blog only for you to vent out your emotions and thoughts, you do not need to give much importance to many other aspects of your blog like advertisements, widgets, etc. But if you blog to help others like this one you are presently reading, or to make money out of it, then you need to also consider few other things in addition to the above ones.  Some things you need to consider are, if that theme supports advertisements without much tweaking and turning the code, does the theme supports the widgets or plugins, like RSS, Protection from Spam comments, Search engine optimization, etc. By default when you have signed up for a WordPress blog, you will be provided with default themes. You can use them or select your own from visiting the WordPress’s own free WP themes or other Paid WP theme websites like Revolutinary Themes, StyleWP, BlogOhBlog. These websites provide professional looking themes with excellent support. If you are serious about blogging or making money from blogging, you should use one of these Paid WP themes.

Following this tip helps you to achieve the goal you have set before starting to blog, more easily and efficiently.

 4. Support: Ensure you will get the support you needed while using the theme from the theme author or website owner. I have seen many times, that the site owner from where the theme is downloaded could not able to help the user who have downloaded and used it for their blog because they are not developed by himself but somebody else and he is only promoting them. If this is the case when you need the support most, then it would lead to frustration and waste of time for you.

 Happy Blogging.

hosting wordpress Question: What are the differences between GoDaddy’s WordPress hosting and Basic Hosting Plans?
GoDaddy offers a specific WordPress hosting plan for a website and a basic hosting plan however, the basic plan offers an install of WordPress as an option. They both cost the same amount. I don’t want to put myself in the situation where I can’t switch back from WordPress if I don’t want to run a blog, but want to keep the hosting. Can someone explain the differences between the two plans?

Best Response:

Answer by Prisqua
I buy all my domains from godaddy but so far I have not heard one good thing about their hosting. Most host offer a painless wordpress install through Fantastico: you basically click on a button and the install is done but if you do a Google search, doing it that way it has security flaws.
If you have to change plan I don’t think it would be an issue, a host is a host after all.

Self Hosted wordpress: The good and the bad

WordPress was born in 2003 and from that time www.wordpress.com hosts more than 10 millions blogs on its own site. That’s not all by any means. This open-source project also allows the other users to access the latest version of WordPress. These users can then download this version and add their own modifications to it. They can then host it on their own domain and use to it to administer their CMS or blog. The result? More than 200 million websites are using WordPress to manage their content in a variety of different ways besides blogging.  Since these figures differ so much from each other, it becomes important to analyze the WordPress platform and the benefits and drawbacks in case you are thinking of using a self hosted WordPress.

Benefits

When you first login to your wordpress account, it will become clear that all you can really do in wordpress is basic blogging. This is to prevent people from using wordpress to inject all kinds of malicious codes that can cause problems for other users. Nevertheless, due to this, you cannot make the most of all kinds of customization features of WordPress. Besides, you will also have to comply with their policy and Agreement terms in order to post any kind of content. If you use WordPress on your own site, then you are only restricted by the rules that are made by the hosting provider of your site.

All these drawbacks vanish the moment you use WordPress files by downloading them and then uploading them on a PHP supporting website host. On your first launch of the CMS that you have newly installed, you may notice a similar interface. However, on further exploration on the settings and options, you will understand that these options can be completely governed by you as you can administer your own blog as you are the sole site administrator.

In other words, if you find the default theme of WordPress too generic for your taste, then you can customize your blog as per your preferences. Though there are some good templates that you can choose form WordPress.com, but your options become almost limitless when you switch to self hosted WordPress website as you can even download a recently made theme, upload it and use if immediately. With time and as you explore more, you can even develop and create your own themes.

Besides the basic blogging function, you can even add new plugins to add new features. The open-source WordPress platform can be reengineered so that it can be integrated in a better way with your other website features.

Drawbacks

Though WordPress does not cost money, the PHP supporting hosting providers are generally paid. You may get a hosting provider that comes free and can support WordPress; however you will still need to buy a domain name in order to market your blog. Those users who are registered with wordpress.com would need to create a sub domain that can be easily remembered. Moreover, WordPress blogs that are hosted in shared hosting servers also need some high maintenance.

Finally

It’s clear that the benefits are more than the drawbacks, which means that a self-hosted website is a good investment for blogs that are expansive and larger. However, if you just want a personal blog or are a first time user, then you can simply register at the WordPress website.
