I’m trying to upload a customized WordPress theme and I keep getting this error when I try to activate the theme:
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/content/t/r/e/tremak/html/wordpress/wp-content/themes/brown_theme/index.php on line 4

Also: I’m using the book, “WordPress 2.7 Complete” by April Hodge Silver to help me with this. I got to up to page 134 and ran into this problem.

Try that. It ran off on mine and did the usual Yahoo Answers … deal and caused the Doctype to run into the head and style tags. Neither of my programs (WeBuilder 2010, DreamWeaver CS4, or WeBuilder 2008) gave me a syntax error on it. I <3 WP too!

I am totally new to this stuff and I made a bad move. I tried modifying the php code in my WordPress theme and now it doesn’t work. And I can’t get back to the original code. Help! How do I get it back? It is the Boldy theme. I don’t want to reinstall because I will lose the good changes that I made. I just want a copy of the original code so I can see what I did wrong.

I am stuck and in the middle of designing a basic website for a movie rental store.
It is for an assignment but I want to go above and beyond what is required. I want to modify a wordpress theme to design the site the way I want it to look. That is the least of my problems. I need a plugin of some sort or a way to view, modify, and query(search) the database using advanced options. I want to show what movies the store currently has and have written all of the code for the database in phpMyAdmin.
What plugins/recommendations do you all have? I just want it to look nice and I’m new to wordpress. I could code a site in php/html but in my opinion, that would look a little worse than an wordpress in my opinion.

If all you want to do is show all movies in their database, a plugin would be not really necessary for this. Just directly add some PHP code to wordpress that will show all the items of the database. Here would be an example that I have done (mind you, this does not use mysql but is grabbing all the contents of a directory and displaying each. But the concept is the same.)

Hi Mark,
You’re best option is to switch to a self hosted site and run WordPress there. With that, you’ll have many more options for themes and plug-ins.
HostGator.com is a popular web host. Their Hatchling plan is around $ 7/month for one domain, or you can have unlimited domains with their Baby Plan at around $ 8/month.

Take the template index.php file and save it as index.htm.
Remove the php code and you’ll be left with the layout. Make sure the css files are attached
Add your text into the appropriate places and off you go.
