Theme Etiquette

WooHoo! You got yourself a nice theme for wordpress, blogger, or whatever the platform may be. Before you go ahead and customize the template, remove copyrights, think about how the designer may feel. I, myself have been one of those sneaky bastards removing copyrights, of themes I have not designed.

To tell you the truth it really has not bothered me when I did it, ruthless right? Yea its great seeing a nice clean template without any promotional links in your footer, but imagine how the designer must feel.In mid 2008 I started developing free css/xhtml templates for the public, all I expected back was one simple back link in the footer. I came across a couple of my templates surprisingly on the web, and guess what? The footer back links were gone, as a designer I felt my templates were great and I should deserve some type of credit.

When a designer or coder completes his work of art, he will more than likely leave a link on the template giving him credit for his work. A coder usually will leave notes in the cascading style sheet, either way they are there for a purpose. He spent a couple hours designing a nice template for the public, all he was looking for was a simple thank you by footer *coder: coded a entire template, for butt-scratch, and you go ahead remove any to all of his credit.

Proper theme etiquette, if you download a theme or template, remember to leave credit for the designer/coder. Unless you have rights to remove copyrights, the credit should stay on there. You wouldn’t like to have your work downloaded and used without credit would you?
